History

Arokia Matha Church

In 1966, a small Christian community was living in Lakshmipuram, which was then part of the Perambur Lourdes Shrine Parish. The community desired to establish a small chapel. Over time, more families settled in Lakshmipuram, and they worked together to receive pastoral guidance and sacraments from the Church.

With the dedicated efforts of the then Perambur Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. McFerran SDB, and the blessings of Archbishop Arulappa, 9 cents of vacant land were purchased on March 27, 1967, on Vivekanandar Street, Lakshmipuram. A thatched-roof chapel was built, where night school was conducted for underprivileged students. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the chapel could not be maintained.

During this period, Holy Mass was celebrated in the homes of Christian families by Rev. Fr. A. M. Chinnappa SDB, the then Assistant Parish Priest of Perambur. The local people, though economically weak, contributed towards the church activities. Later, in 1970, another plot of land (the present church location) was purchased, and Rev. Fr. Antony Hickman built a small thatched-roof chapel.

More families continued to settle in the area, and by 1975, Lakshmipuram, which was initially a sub-parish of Perambur, became part of the newly established Peravallur Resurrection Church in 1976. The first Parish Priest of Peravallur was Rev. Fr. Lazar SDB. In 1979, Rev. Fr. Mathew Orathal purchased additional land for the church.

In 1984, Rev. Fr. N. A. Joseph SDB replaced the old roof with a new structure and helped local children pursue higher education and vocational training.

During Rev. Fr. Pascal's tenure, a boundary wall was constructed around the church. At this time, there were 60 Catholic families in the parish. Rev. Fr. Paul Moussariyet introduced the concept of Anbiyams (Small Christian Communities) in 1999, constructed the Parish Priest's residence, and acquired more land. The first Anbiyam anniversary was celebrated in 2001, and efforts began to elevate the church to a full-fledged parish. The parish boundaries were officially defined.

With Rev. Fr. Paul Moussariyet's persistent efforts, on June 8, 2003, a Holy Mass was celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Lawrence Pius, in the presence of Perambur Parish Priest Bishop Soundararajan and Fr. Paul Moussariyet, officially declaring Arokia Matha Church as an independent parish.

The first Parish Priest of the newly established parish was Rev. Fr. Gnanaprakasham.

On September 8, 2008, Archbishop A. M. Chinnappa SDB laid the foundation stone for the new church building. The construction was carried out in multiple phases, with the first and second floors completed over time. After serving for ten years, Fr. Gnanaprakasham was transferred before the church construction was fully completed. Rev. Fr. Clement Bala took over, and with the unwavering support of the parishioners, successfully completed the church construction. On August 28, 2014, the church was consecrated by Archbishop Antony Sami.

Report on SYM (Salesian Youth Movement) Event – 10th November 2024

On 10th November 2024, the office bearers of the LSY Perambur participated in the SYM (Salesian Youth Movement) meeting held at the Citadel Siga, Kilpauk. The event brought together young people passionate about the teachings of Don Bosco and engaged in various activities designed to foster community spirit, leadership, and collaboration.

The meeting began with an engaging ice-breaker activity that encouraged everyone present to interact with one another. This fun and interactive session helped participants feel comfortable and build connections right from the start.

Following the ice-breaker, a short video was screened, showcasing the life and mission of St. Don Bosco, emphasizing his dedication to the youth. The video was followed by a talk by Fr. John Christy, who spoke about Don Bosco's impact on the youth and his enduring legacy. His inspiring words encouraged the participants to continue Don Bosco's work in their own communities.

The session then moved into an interactive quiz, testing the participants' knowledge about Don Bosco's life, values, and teachings. This activity was not only educational but also fostered a sense of friendly competition among the attendees.

The latter part of the meeting focused on planning the upcoming SYM event, which will take place from 29th December 2024 to 1st January 2025 at Sacred Hearts College, Tirupattur. This event will serve as an international retreat for youth from the 12 Salesian provinces: Bengaluru, Chennai, New Delhi, Mumbai, Panjim, Dimapur, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Shillong, Trichy, Sri Lanka, and Kolkata. The retreat's theme is *"Anchor with Hope"*, a call to inspire young people to remain rooted in hope amid challenges.

Excitement surrounding the event was palpable, as participants from all 26 states across India, as well as international attendees from Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh will come together for a transformative spiritual experience. The event promises to be an opportunity for young people to connect, share, and grow in their faith, while being grounded in the Salesian tradition of service, community, and hope.

The meeting also included a detailed discussion on the logistics of the upcoming retreat. Ideas were exchanged regarding the activities, schedules, and roles of the different teams involved in the retreat's organization. There was a clear sense of teamwork, and the office bearers expressed their enthusiasm about contributing to the success of this event.

In conclusion, the SYM event on 10th November 2024 was a productive and enjoyable gathering that allowed LSY Perambur office bearers to learn, connect, and contribute to the upcoming retreat. It underscored the importance of leadership, teamwork, and the powerful legacy of Don Bosco in guiding young people on their spiritual journey. The upcoming event promises to be a moment of great inspiration and unity for the youth across the Salesian provinces.
